His research has been focused on some of the most important real-world problems. His recent research includes assessment of advanced-coal technologies in the context of global climate change and energy security; analysis of policy and institutional changes needed to facilitate their innovation and use; analysis of China's technological efforts in improving oil security to understand China's decision-making under deep uncertainties; and studies of the performance, strengths, and weakness of China's innovation system for advanced energy technologies.
